What Is Stump Grinding?

 Stump Grinding

Stump grinding is the most efficient way to remove a tree stump after a tree has been cut down. Using a powerful stump grinder, we reduce the stump to wood chips below ground level — eliminating tripping hazards and freeing up usable yard space.

Leftover stumps are not just unsightly — they attract insects, harbor disease, and make mowing difficult. Our grinding process reaches deep enough to prevent re-sprouting, so you won't have to worry about new growth.

Once the stump is ground down, we fill the area with wood chip mulch or haul it away, depending on your preference. The result is a clean, flat surface ready for new landscaping or sod.

When Is Stump Grinding Necessary?

 Stump Grinding

Stump grinding is most immediately necessary when a stump creates a tripping hazard in a frequently used area — such as near a walkway, play area, or lawn. Stumps partially concealed by grass or vegetation are particularly dangerous, and removing them eliminates the hazard and the liability that comes with it.

Old stumps can become a hub for wood-boring insects, termites, and fungal disease that can spread to nearby healthy trees. If you notice fungal growth, insect activity, or new sprout growth emerging from an old stump, grinding should be scheduled promptly to prevent these problems from spreading to the rest of your landscape.

Stump grinding is also necessary when preparing to install new landscaping, sod, garden beds, hardscaping, or construction on your property. Leftover stumps interfere with equipment and prevent a clean result. Grinding the stump first ensures your next project starts on a clean slate with full use of your outdoor space.

What Is Required For Stump Grinding?

 Stump Grinding

Before stump grinding begins, the area around the stump must be cleared of rocks, gravel, decorative stones, and debris that could damage the grinder or become projectiles during operation. Our equipment needs a clear working radius of at least 3 feet around the stump.

Underground utility lines — including sprinkler systems, electrical conduits, and gas lines — should be located and marked before grinding begins. In Colorado, you can call 811 to have public utilities marked for free. For private irrigation systems, please flag or communicate the location of lines near the stump before our crew arrives.

Our equipment requires a clear access path of approximately 36 inches wide to reach the stump. If access is through a gate or fence opening, please confirm the width in advance. For stumps in tight spaces or with limited access, our team will assess options and discuss the best approach during the estimate.
